BDS Programme

Dental Section, Islamabad Medical & Dental College was established in 2010 to start the BDS program. The vision was to prepare Dental Practitioners for the country and meet development needs through the provision of oral health services to our population. This program is reviewed every year and as a result of the review process changes are suggested to improve the quality of dental education and hence the BDS curriculum keeps on evolving. This year the curriculum review process is bringing a major change which is the adoption of module based curriculum which would run through the first two academic years. The length of the 4-year BDS program is divided into modules in the first two years of six blocks of twelve weeks each. The next two years have clerkships of two month each in all the clinical departments in rotation. There are 100 students enrolled in the first and second year classes.

The foundational basic sciences and preclinical courses are taught primarily in the first two years of curriculum with direct patient care beginning early in the third year. The clinical curriculum is competency based; focusing on patient-centered comprehensive care with additional clinical experience provided by rotations to specialty and community clinics. In addition to our required curriculum, BDS students have abundant opportunities for individualized professional development through various student societies, extracurricular experience in research, teaching, leadership, sports and community service. Basic biomedical and preclinical facilities are available at the main campus, while the clinical competencies are learned at the Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital (ANTH) and Islamabad Dental Hospital (IDH).

Islamabad Medical & Dental College has always been innovative and different, hence we feel that the present change has been necessitated by the need to keep abreast with the advancement in dental knowledge and the demand for leadership skills. Our innovative faculty has improved the course content by integration of subjects and their clinical correlation with more emphasis on understanding than rote learning. The Institutional goal is to produce safe dental surgeon, humanitarians, researchers with leadership qualities and self-learners. We welcome your application to our 4-year BDS program and look forward to meeting you in the near future. Please contact the student affair department for more details.
